Upgrades can boost the value of weapons, armors and rings. They also boost extra bonuses like crit chance and PvE damage.

For instance, a weapon with the upgrade template ending in % will gain 3% attack damage every time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

Item upgrading costs crests and the current level of the item level upgrade. The cost increases as the level of the item increases.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into armor, weapons and trinkets to provide a stat bonus or extra effect while they're in use. They can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors or trading with other players, or looting. Certain upgrades also come with specific cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot for them. The item must be at a minimum upgraded to blue level to allow a component to be used. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used once and cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a specific kind of upgrade component that is used for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment and some of the back items that are not ascending. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging gear from the ascended, or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it's applied to (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' is changed to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players to make stronger versions of the equipment using the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than would be required to achieve the same upgrade level through normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades can be crafted from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed mechanic. They can also be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear or by purchasing them from the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals each.

Each upgrade increases the probability that a higher tier version of the item will be dropped at the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to continue improving their equipment even if they're not sure of how much it will improve following a subsequent reset.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process could be costly, and there is a substantial possibility that the item upgrader kit will be obsolete or even break when it fails. A unsuccessful upgrade could ruin Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. This is reduced by the availability of cash shop items that double or even eliminate the chance of failure, as well as some upgrades that offer the benefit of being reinserted into an item.

Glyphs

Leveling

The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item is determined on the rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots.
