There are three types of upgrade components: universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which comprise gems, are able to be used in any type of equipment, and offer lower bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions are gems that are only available in equipment that is legendary or ascended. They provide the same bonuses as jewels, but cannot be used with any other equipment. Suffix upgrades that can be put in gathering tools, add their name to the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for instance adding a Glyph to a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor will transform it into a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

In the case of upgrades to gather tools when a player swaps one glyph with a different one the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component the item will be destroyed, except for the inscriptions that can be freely swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system is different from previous versions in some fundamental ways. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can only be upgraded a set number of times before they're "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, however the materials required for upgrades do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a few key items and maximize their impact, instead of spreading cost of upgrades across several pieces.
