The ability to upgrade items allows players to upgrade their weapons and equipment with new affixes, boosting its stats base or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Usually items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, whereas objects with strong bases, such as Eth titans don't change in their stats following being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors trinkets, weapons, and gathering tools. They provide an attribute benefit, or an additional benefit, while the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, found in loot from enemies, or obtained from chests and missions. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before they can be upgraded.

To upgrade an item of armor, the player must choose it and click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade stats and the required component or materials.

There are three kinds: universal upgrades (which include gems) Prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, which comprise gems, can be put in any type of equipment and offer less bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions are only placed in gear that is ascended and legendary equipment are similar to jewels but have higher bonuses and are not able to be placed in any other type of equipment. For example, adding a Glyph could transform the staff wrapping of Minor Vigor into a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.

Leveling

If an item fails to get to its maximum level, the NPC will give the player the option of transfer it to a different character and then re-infuse it with a different set of upgrades. This process can take up to two hours and will cost the same amount of material but will have less chance of success.
