Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it can boost the rarity of an item or mark Level and increase other stats.

Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a certain amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's base stats increases as it is upgraded. This value is the sum of all of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive depending on the person you hire and what you do. This is due to the fact that many perks need to be replaced to allow the item to be upgraded.

It can also be used as a gating requirement while queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It also serves to determine a gating condition when waiting for dungeons, scenarios, and raids, as well as to limit the amount of PvP gear that a player can wear (since PvP is limited to a lower level). Players can see their average level of item on their character sheet.

When deciding whether to purchase or sell equipment, players can compare the item level. It's a good gauge of an item's worth and the amount of damage it will be capable of dealing with. Comparing items from the inventory of a vendor is possible using the level of the item.

The level of the item can be checked by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full description of the item, including its ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are a few theories on how the item level calculation is done. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula that determines the amount an item's stats are worth. It is based on the fact that different benefits are valued differently and that gems in the sockets increase the item's value. This process could result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl, which is typically close to Blizzard's actual level of the item.

However, this isn't the only factor which determines the ilvl of an item, as the level of the region the item was dropped in could alter the value of its stats, such as by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have more the ilvl than items from lower level instances.

Item Stats

Item stats are a big part of what makes or breaks an item for players. The game uses a lot of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the Best item upgrade." The base stats of a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat modification that are in turn boosted by the player's level.

Item upgrades add to that by boosting certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines the upgrade cost. A grey or white item for instance, can only be upgraded one time however, items that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at more expensive costs.

Affixes can also be used to alter the stats of an item. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can provide the item additional damage, or add a unique ability to the item (such as reviving dead or cutting down cooldowns) or make the item unique by adding an exclusive name to the item.

All affixes are re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button. It will cost a set amount in gold and items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges as with other rerolling methods.

Players can upgrade item an item to a specific stat, or reroll attaches. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However each item will contain at least one stat in the same range, unless it's an exclusive item, or a God Roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could be changed is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to roll the affixes, or choose which stats to increase. But as with base equipment, this would need to be carried out on a per-item upgrader mod basis and the interface for comparing items would not display all the possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the odds of finding items and the properties that are spawned from loot drops, and the intensity of these properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade equipment earlier in the game. This is especially beneficial in the early game, because players tend to put weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

Luck can also increase the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading which increases with each level and can be further increased by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to increase the value of 40 luck or to boost the Luck of an item up to 140.

Furthermore some items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be found in the shops or made using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are costly and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the success rate of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their items if it fails.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading that item and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on the extent to which the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%..

The Luck of an item may affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. All items have an average success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases that chance by an additional 5%.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above the items in the inventory. This can block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
