Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade, it can boost an item's Rarity or Mark Level and increase other stats.

Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a specific amount.

Item Level

When an Best item upgrade is upgraded, its stats are increased in value. This value is the total of all the upgraded benefits (attack, magic attack and defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high depending on the upgrader and the type of upgrade you choose to make. This is due to the number of perks that must be modified to upgrade an item.

It is also used as a gating requirement while queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It is also used to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear since PvP is not available at a lower level. Players can see their average item level in their character sheet.

When deciding to purchase or sell gear, players can compare the item level. It's an excellent indicator of the quality of an item and how much damage it is able to deal. The level of the item can be used to compare items when looking at the inventory of a seller.

On PC, you are able to view the item level using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including the ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are a few theories about how the calculation of an item's level is done. One theory is that the item level is a numerical value derived from a formula that determines the amount an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different worth and that gems in sockets increase the overall value of the item. This process could result in a calculated amount for the item's ilvl, which is usually quite close to Blizzard's real item level.

However, this is not the only factor that determines the ilvl of an item, because the size of the area the item was dropped in could alter the value of its stats, for instance by adding a level to its haste or crit rating. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.

Item Stats

Stats on an item are a significant part of what determines the value of an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in different ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the Best item upgrade." The base stats of a weapon are boosted by the weapon's stat modifications, which are themselves increased by the player's skill.

The upgrades to items add by boosting certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines the cost of upgrading. For instance, a gray or white item can only be upgraded once, whereas an item with the rare tiers will be upgraded several times at higher prices.

Another way to change the stats of an item is through affixes. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. The affixes could do things like give the item additional damage, add a special capability to the item (such as reviving dead or decreasing the duration of cooldowns) or make the item unique by giving an additional name to the item.

At present, all affixes can be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button, which is accompanied by circling arrows. This process will cost the player a specific amount of gold and other items which can be added to the upgrade gauge in the same way as the other options for rerolling.

In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may select which of the available stats they want to keep on an item when it is upgraded. The stat ranges are determined by the item's level. However every item will have at least one stat within that range unless they are an item that is unique or the item is a God Roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could be changed is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to roll the attaches, or select which stats to increase. Similar to base equipment, it must be done per item, and the item comparison interface will not show all possible stats simultaneously.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the likelihood of finding items and the properties that are spawned from loot drops and the strength of the properties. It doesn't, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives the player a chance to acquire better equipment earlier in the game and is therefore more beneficial in early game runs than in later ones, because most players value higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

Luck can also boost the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade probability that increases with each item level and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can be improved with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on their material type) for a further +40 luck, or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Certain items, such as the Hollow-infused weapon can also be crafted to increase the damage of any ability that causes damage by 5%. These items are available in the shop or created by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are some cash shop items which allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent them from losing an item if the upgrade is unsuccessful.

The success rate of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of completing the upgrade successfully and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased by so much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail can't be greater than 100%..

The Luck of an item may influence the success of an upgrade. Every item has a base success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases that chance by 5percent.

The upgrade overlays of the item are rendered above items in the inventory. This can obscure enchantment effects and other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
