Utilizing the level of an item can help players compare the potency of gear when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a measure of the damage and quality. The level of the item can be used to evaluate items when looking at a vendor's inventory.

The item level can be checked by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the item's full description, including the ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are several theories about how the level of an item is calculated. One theory says that the item level is determined by an equation that determines the worth of an item's stats actually are. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different values and that sockets have gems that increase the item's overall value. This could result in a calculated item's ilvl that is typically very close to Blizzard's real level of the item.

Item Stats

The stats of an item are a major element in what makes or breaks an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the Best item upgrader." The stat mods on a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then boosted by the player's level.

Another thing that could change is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to reroll attachments, or pick which stats to boost. But as with base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-item basis and the interface for comparing items wouldn't show all possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the odds of item discoveries, the properties spawned on loot drops and the intensity of these properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players an opportunity to get better gear earlier in the game. This is more advantageous for early game runs, because players tend to put weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each level of the item. It is also possible to be increased by using anti-materials, such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be created or spawned with the Luck property, with a default value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the type of material) to add another 40 luck, or to increase the luck of the item to 140.

Furthermore some items, such as the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow, can be equipped to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be found in the shop or created using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Item upgrades are costly and not all upgrades will succeed. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to boost their success rate or prevent them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.

The success rate of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage indicates the probability of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to how much the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't be greater than 100%..

The Luck of an item can also influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. Every item has an average success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the items in the inventory therefore enchantment glints and other effects could be obstructed by the overlays.
