Upgrades to an item are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it could boost an item upgrader mod's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

Upgrades to equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests Each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a specific amount.

Item Level

When an item is upgraded, its basic stats increase in value. This is the sum of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive, depending on the person you hire and what you do. This is due to the sheer number of perks that have to be changed in order to upgrade an item.

It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used to limit the amount of PvP gear players can use as PvP is restricted at a lower level. The average level of the item can be found on the character sheet.

When deciding whether to purchase or sell gear players can evaluate the levels of the item. It's a measure of the item's condition and its quality. Comparing items in the inventory of a vendor can be done by using the item's level.

The level of the item can be checked by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the item's full description, including the ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are several theories about how the level of an item upgrade is determined. One theory is that the item level is a number derived from a formula which calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration that different advantages are valued differently and that gems in sockets boost the value of the item. This process can result in a calculated value for the item upgrading's level, which is typically close to Blizzard's actual item level.

However, this isn't the only factor that affects an item's ilvl, because the size of the area the item dropped in can change the value of its stats, for instance by adding a level to its haste rating or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have more value than items dropped in lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The item's stats can make or break an item for players. The game uses a lot of them in various ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the best." The base stats on a weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat modifications that are in turn increased by the player's skill.

The upgrades to an item can increase the stats of an item. The rarity of an item determines the cost of upgrading. For instance, a gray or white item will only be upgraded once, whereas items with rare tiers will be upgraded several times at higher prices.

Another method to alter the stats of an item is through affixes. They are stat boosters that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can be used to give items extra damage, special abilities (such as reviving dead or reducing cooling downs) or to differentiate them by adding a name.

All affixes are being re-rolled right now by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button. This will cost a certain amount of gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges just like the other rerolling methods.

In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may also choose which of the available stats to be kept on an item after it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges of an item are based on the level of the item, but all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the specified range, unless it is an exclusive item or a God roll from a boss of a raid.

Another thing that could be changed is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to reroll the affixes, or choose which stats to increase. But as with base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't show all possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the odds of finding items, the properties spawned on loot drops, and the intensity of those properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It simply gives players a chance to acquire better equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more valuable in the early game than later ones since most players prefer more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

Luck can also increase the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading which increases with each level and can be further increased by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can spawn or be crafted with the Luck property, which has a default value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to grant an additional +40 Luck or to increase the existing Luck of an item, up to 140.

Additionally some items, such as the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow, can be equipped to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items are available at the store or crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chances of success for an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their items if it does not work.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading the item, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased so much, and the chance that the upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..

The luck of an item can also affect the success of an upgrade. Each item has an initial success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by an additional 5percent.

The upgrade overlays of the item are rendered above items in the inventory. This can block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the item upgrader (head to Google) CORE client config.
