Upgrades can give you an increase in specific stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. A random extra substat is also added to every upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as valuable for those with higher variance due to the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of armor or weapon. However, the item used to upgrade will remain in use for a long time and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to the enchantments.

The upgrader is located in every major city, and can be visited at any time to upgrade your gear. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks to keep your equipment up-to-date.

The cost of upgrades will be based on the current level of the item being upgraded however, they will always be cheaper than buying new equipment from other sources. For example upgrading a Benthic chest piece to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points purchasing a similar piece from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade weapons, armor, tools and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased from item upgraders NPCs for various currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade item is able to be used on any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will display the item's next level of upgrade, in the event that there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the item slot and current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for example. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or crests used. After an item upgrader kit has been upgraded to a certain amount and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Many locations offer Item Level Upgrade upgraders, including the main Island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and a possibility of getting an entirely new recipe. The discount on upgrades increases when more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II is no upgrader for items available at the start of Icewind Dale. The NPCs who are able to facilitate upgrades are only accessible through a variety means. This is both a benefit and a disadvantage.

Crests

Players can earn crests by finishing tasks at the appropriate level. This could be by engaging in outdoor activities or taking on dungeons and raids of all difficulty levels to obtain lower-tier gear or Mythicbosses of raids or dungeons that have a high difficulty to obtain endgame gear. These crests are then exchanged with an upgrader, such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and pathways.

The new currency system isn't difficult to use, but it brings some changes to the upgrade process. When a piece attains the highest level of upgrade item for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it no longer requires Flightstones. This allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest level possible on all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also essential to use crests with care, since they are only used for one purpose. For instance, it's a good idea make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the Best item upgrader gear you have available, and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you plan on making. This is especially relevant for items like trinkets and rings that take up multiple slots. The discount on the account is only applicable when all the slots on the character are filled with top-quality gear.
