Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases item level by +3. Each upgrade also increases the random substatus.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as important for those with higher variance due to the requirement to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied on any kind of armor or weapons. However, the item used to upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and will not be able to be used again. Upgrades can be applied to enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear up-to-date, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrades will vary based on the current item level of the equipment being upgraded but they will always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment from other sources. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest piece to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points, purchasing a similar piece from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items that can be used to level up weapons and tools, armor and other items. They can be purchased through NPCs who sell upgrades to item upgrades owners in a variety of currencies. They are also available on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any weapon, tool or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next upgrade level when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the slot of the item and the current level of the item, with weapons costing more than bracers or gloves, for instance. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Certain upgrades provide discounts on Flightstones. Once an item level upgrade has been upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currencies.

Upgraders for items can be found at many locations including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount as well as a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrading increases as more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are only available through a variety of methods. This is both a benefit and a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system was modified a bit, and numerous new features added. Once a player has upgraded to a certain item level Upgrade level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same level will cost less. This applies regardless of whether the items come from an entirely different set of equipment.

The discount is applicable to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is reduced as well, but is only available once certain milestones are reached.

Crests

When it comes to upgrading gear in WoW, players have a couple of options. Flightstones are an item that is available to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more special and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system that was introduced in 10.1 and are available in four ranks.

First, you must be aware that crests are only available for equipment that is with a certain rank. Each rank has a different upgrade path. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, depending on the type or gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities for lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons with any difficulty for higher-tier items or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses or dungeons for endgame gear. These crests can then be exchanged at an upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken, for the appropriate upgrade paths and steps.

Using these new currencies isn't that difficult, but the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest possible level on all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests only have one usage therefore it's essential to use them properly. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the highest-quality gear that you can find and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is especially relevant for items like trinkets and rings that fill multiple slots. The discount on the account is only applicable when all the slots on the character are filled with top-quality equipment.
