Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and gear by adding new affixes that boost its stats base or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item upgrader in their inventory, and also access the kiln.

Upgrade components

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important variations from the previous versions. Gear is now classified into tracks, and each item is able to be upgraded so many times before it is "leveled out." The upgrade cost is increased with each level, but the required materials do not increase as much.
