Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or adding additional perks. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Items with weak bases, like rings can be upgraded to stronger bases. Items with strong bases, such as the Titans of eth have little changes in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be slotted into weapons, armor, trinkets and gathering tools, providing an added bonus or impact when the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, or found as loot gathered by enemies or received from missions and chests. Some upgrades additionally have special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before they are upgraded.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system differs from the previous versions in a few key ways. Gear is now classified into tracks, and each item can only be upgraded as many times before it is "leveled out."
