The Great Vault can be searched by players to determine whether an item is upgradeable. The search can also determine whether the item is a certain tier and if the player could benefit from a specific upgrade. During the upgrade process, an item will slowly grow closer to the next stage, but not always reach the maximum upgrade bar. This process uses Growthstones and Sollant and Sollant, but there's the chance to get an upgraded item in only one cycle of growth. The higher the level an item attains the more powerful its stats will be and the more items that can be upgraded. Upgrade components can be slotted into armor, weapons and trinkets to give an attribute bonus or extra effect when the equipment is being used. Certain upgrade components can be equipped with additional cosmetic effects. Upgrade components can be acquired by crafting, buying from vendors or the Trading Post, looting or receiving them as gifts. Players can also retrieve upgraded items using an Upgrade extractor or salvaging with a high-tier salvage kit. Glyphs that are placed in gathering tools, can be freely swapped without any restrictions. By selecting the item and pressing the green button with a an arrow for rerolling the player can reroll it into another upgradeable item. This will change the layout of the game and allow players to select up to six items for "recycling". The item will be replaced with an item of level 1. Recycled items won't keep their level, nor the resources used to upgrade them. The maximum upgrade level of an item is determined by the item's tier as well as its quality. Uncommon items can be upgraded to the maximum level of six while Rare and Epic items can be upgraded up to level nine. The upgrades to an item are added to the base statistics of the item which means that they won't increase after a certain point.
